We live in a world that loves busy people. Loves them.
It’s a world that feeds us a steady diet of breaking news, mobile technology and social media. We are told ‘busy’ means important. Successful. Fabulous. Normal.
But here’s something that’s rarely mentioned, busy minds aren’t so wonderful when you’re in a leadership role.
You need to be clear-headed. You need to make decisions with a sharp, calm mind. And, while this might be hard to hear, a busy mind is more often than not, a scattered mind.
I see you shaking your fist at me…it sounds unfathomable to have a demanding career and active family life without having a mind that’s bursting at the seams. I agree with you – it’s not easy.
But I challenge you to set a goal for yourself to have a calmer, less frantic mind – and I think you’ll be surprised at how fast the benefits kick in.
Start by giving yourself just a few minutes in the morning or at the end of the day to put down all technology, to let go of all the busyness, and to tell yourself it’s ok to just be still and silent. To just be.
Sounds painfully simple, right? Can you do it for 3 weeks straight? And possibly right through the holiday season?
A stressed mind creates more stress. A busy mind creates anxiety. And in the month of December stress and anxiety can become elevated. This can easily lead to poor decision-making. It can lead to strained relationships. It can lead to inadvertently picking a harder path because your stressed out mind is too busy sorting through copious information to see an easy path right in front of it.
Play with letting your mind be calmer, more still. Take this 3-week challenge. You’ll find yourself on the path to more empowered leading and living.
I’m taking the challenge and I’m taking it one step further. This will be your last blog post for 2013. I’m focusing my writing efforts in December on finishing off my new website and new tools to help you lead and live better. Here’s a sneak peek of what’s to come.
I’m also taking some down time to refuel my creative well and spend some holiday time with my family and friends.
Wishing you and yours a most lovely holiday season and see you in 2014.
